general Dress Code & studio guidelines
General Dress Code:
To help keep our studio professional and family-friendly, please no showing of cleavage, midriff, excessive back/lower back, and no booty shorts without tights/leggings underneath them.
Undergarments should be worn but not show (sports bra straps are typically allowed, etc, but please keep it classy!)
Minimal jewelry only (stud earrings, promise ring, engagement ring/wedding band are allowed)
NO STREET SHOES, gum, food, or drinks other than water allowed on dance floor
Please arrive ready to start on time to show respect to your teacher and classmates — use the restroom before class!
No cell phones during class (if you are a parent or need your phone because of your job, please speak with your instructor ahead of time)
Encourage your fellow dancers — we are not here to compete against each other but to support one another as we all grow in dance!
Have good work ethic and a good attitude. Be open to receiving feedback from your teachers and be willing to apply it. We are here to encourage you and help you grow!
class-specific Dress Code
guys (Ages 3-6)
Sweat pants or stretch shorts and plain colored t-shirt
Black ballet shoes, caramel/skin-colored jazz shoes, or black tap shoes depending on the class
For Hip Hop/Tumble (ages 5-6), boys may wear dance sneakers, sneakers that have not been worn outside, non-slippery socks, or they may dance barefoot
All other styles can be danced barefoot
guys (Ages 7+)
Ballet
Black stretchy pants or shorts. They do not need to be as form fitting as tights or leggings, but they should not be too loose. Please speak with your teacher if you are unsure.
Fitted white or black tank/t-shirt or AODA t-shirt, tucked into pants. Please no other graphic t-shirt.
Black ballet shoes (may be worn barefoot or with black ballet socks underneath)
**Adult Ballet Class may wear any stretchy clothing (no showing midriffs or undergarments).
All Other Styles
Sweat pants or stretch shorts and plain colored t-shirt or AODA t-shirt
Jazz & Musical Theatre - Skin-colored jazz shoes
Tap - Black tap shoes
Hip Hop - Dance sneakers or socks (be aware they will begin to turn black after heavy dancing on our floor). Sneakers that have not been worn outside are also optional.
All other styles can be danced barefoot
GIRLS (AgES 2-6)
Creative Movement (Ages 2-4), Ballet/Tap (Ages 3-6), Ballet/Jazz (Ages 4-6)
Any colored leotard
Skirt is optional, but must be attached to leotard for 2-4 year olds
Ballet pink or flesh-toned tights (footed or transitional)*
tights must match ballet shoes: pink with pink and flesh-toned with flesh-toned
AODA t-shirts are allowed
Shoes:
Ballet pink or flesh-toned leather or canvas ballet shoes (no satin or slipper ballet shoes) *
Ballet shoes must match ballet tights: pink with pink and flesh-toned with flesh-toned
AND either black tap shoes OR skin-colored jazz shoes, depending on the combo class (tap shoes should be full sole, not split sole)
For Creative Movement, only ballet shoes are needed
Hair pulled back out of face
Hip Hop/Tumble (Ages 5-6)
Girls may wear sweat pants, stretchy shorts, etc, with a fitted shirt (no midriff showing)
AODA t-shirts and sweatshirts are allowed
Barefoot, dance sneakers, sneakers that have not been worn outside, non-slip socks, or barefoot
GIRLS (AGES 7-Adult**)
Ballet, Pre-Pointe, Pointe, Technique (Ages 7+, Levels 1-2)
Black leotard
Black or ballet pink skirt or shorts optional, but no pants or capris
Footed or transitional ballet pink tights or skin-colored tights (dancers en pointe should wear transitional tights) *
tights must match ballet shoes: pink with pink and flesh-toned with flesh-toned
Shoes:
For ages 7-10: Ballet pink or skin-colored leather or canvas ballet shoes (no satin or “dress up” slipper ballet shoes) *
Ballet shoes must match ballet tights: pink with pink and flesh-toned with flesh-toned
For ages 11+: Ballet pink or skin-colored split-sole stretch canvas is our preferred ballet shoe *
Ballet shoes must match ballet tights: pink with pink and flesh-toned with flesh-toned
Hair slicked back into a bun
Adult Ballet and Adult Lyrical/Contemporary Class may wear any form-fitting, stretchy clothing (ensure your clothing matches our general dress code as listed above)
Dancers in Pre-Pointe/Pointe class will also need a TheraBand, or a similar exercise/resistance band. When approved by their teacher, they will be given instructions on pointe shoes.
Ballet Levels 3-4
Tights, shoes and hair should follow above guidelines.
For Ballet 3 class, dancers may wear any colored leotard. If you wear skirts/shorts, they should still be black or ballet pink.
For Ballet 4 class, dancers may wear any colored leotard and any colored short/skirt.
Contemporary, Lyrical (Ages 7+ and levels 1-2, Teen/Adult classes)
Black, grey, white, or ballet pink leotard or long fitted tank or short sleeve shirt
Black, grey, white, or ballet pink shorts or capris
Black, ballet pink, or skin-colored tights or leggings (required with shorts, optional with capris)
AODA t-shirts are allowed (AODA sweatshirts may be worn during warm-up only with teacher’s permission)
Optional flesh-toned FootUndeez (toes must be visible)
In our Contemporary 11+ classes, dancers may wear flesh-toned dance socks (these are unique from normal socks and must be actual dance socks!)
Hair pulled back into a ponytail or bun
Contemporary Levels 3-4
Tights, shoes and hair should follow above guidelines.
For Contemporary 3 class, dancers may wear any colored leotard. If you wear skirts/shorts, they should still be black or ballet pink.
For Contemporary 4 class, dancers may wear any colored leotard and any colored short/skirt.
Hip Hop, Musical Theatre, Tap (Ages 7+)
Clothing that does not hinder dancing (ensure your clothing matches our general dress code as listed above)
AODA t-shirts and sweatshirts are allowed
Hair pulled back for movement
Hip Hop Shoes - Dance sneakers or socks (be aware they may begin to turn black after heavy dancing on our floor). Sneakers that have not been worn outside are optional and up to your teacher.
Musical Theatre Shoes - Caramel or flesh-toned jazz or flat character shoes (all shoes will have a slight heel, however, we do NOT want an obvious 1-2” heel!)
Tap Shoes - Ages 7-10 or beginners: Black full sole tap shoes / Ages 11+ WITH previous tap experience may choose between black full sole or split sole tap shoes
Jazz, Modern (Ages 7+, and levels 1-2)
Black leotard
Black shorts, skirts, capris and pants optional
Black, ballet pink, or skin-colored tights or leggings (required with shorts and skirts, optional with capris and pants)
AODA t-shirts are allowed (AODA sweatshirts may be worn during warm-up with teacher’s permission)
Jazz Hair - Pulled back into a bun, ponytail, or braid
Jazz Shoes - flesh-toned jazz shoes
Modern Hair - Pulled back for movement
Modern Shoes - Barefoot (flesh-toned FootUndeez are optional but toes must be visible)
Jazz, Modern Levels 3-4
Tights, shoes and hair should follow above guidelines.
For Jazz and Modern 3-4 class, dancers may wear any colored leotard. When wearing leggings, they should still be black, gray or pink. When wearing skirt/shorts, they can be any color.
